First Blog

Hello!

My name is Remy, I'm a senior at the University of Houston majoring in physics with a math minor. I am taking this course for several reasons: one is to fulfill a core requirement but another is to gain a better understanding of poetry. I have always had an appreciation for literature in many forms but I am hopeful that this class will give me a better understanding of the elements used in critique and analysis.

I enjoy writing but I rarely have the chance to do it purely for enjoyment. Occasionally, I will be inspired to share my feelings with the world by writing them out on paper, but usually the writing I do is for academic or professional purposes. Lately, letters of correspondence have been the majority of my written work. I am most proud of the constitution I created for my student organization, Freedom in Renewable Energy. In addition to that, I also write for the associated website, http://www.uh.edu/greenenergy, of which I am currently the webmaster. So, in short I have recently only written out of necessity rather than for pleasure but I hope to gain inspiration from this course.

In my opinon, words are very powerful tools that are used to create images. Some people take this for granted, but I am very aware of the effect these images can have on people; that is why I appreciate poetry. Words can create feelings, ideas, questions, etc. whether those are based on reality or fantasy. An author has an opportunity to control a reader's thoughts in a unique way that has a profound effect on our subsequent perception. We (as readers) can gain new perspective by sharing the author's insight. I hope to gain a deeper understanding of the powerful use of language throughout history and to understand better the context in which it is used.
